The Welkite Mekane Yesus Child Survival Program serves women and their babies in the community of Welkite, Ethiopia. Many people there lack sufficient food and shelter, leading to a high rate of child mortality, as well as other problems such as malnutrition and disease. Additionally, nearly all women remain illiterate and unemployed, living in a male-dominated culture.
Compassion International founded this program in Welkite to benefit infants and toddlers by providing their mothers with the opportunity to rise from poverty. People who support the mission fund services ranging from medical checkups and immunizations to education and spiritual mentorship, on top of more basic needs such as proper nutrition. Compassion International carries out its program through the assistance of local churches.
